How to prepare for your return to the office: mastering touch typing

A bit of philosophy and futurology

Already, archives, libraries, and museums are actively digitizing all the data they have, and futurologists believe that soon even human thoughts will be automatically digitized using special devices.

But such devices do not yet exist: to transfer your ideas to a computer, you need to bang your fingers on the keyboard for a long time.

Typing is an integral part of the work of many professionals – from secretaries to lawyers and, of course, writers. It is known that every office worker and every freelancer spends at least an hour a day typing, and on average 5 and a half hours.

Some specifics and facts

Touch typing is when you type without looking at the keyboard and using all ten fingers.

This skill may seem simple and insignificant, but only before you know the following facts:

  • Learning to touch-type can save you 20 minutes a day. At the same time, if you increase the typing speed by 20%, you will save 35 minutes a day or 21 days a year.
  • If you train touch typing for 30 minutes every day, you will see progress in two weeks.
  • 65% of people learn to type quickly before age 24, although in fact, a person of any age can learn touch typing.
  • The average number of errors per minute for fast printing is only 8.
  • Average print speed – 207 characters per minute. However, regular training can help you type twice or even three times faster.

Blind printing isn’t just about ‘type faster’. You save time not only on speed but also on fixing mistakes and distracting the keyboard.

For example, you don’t type much, increasing the speed by 20% doesn’t sound very convincing to you. But imagine this situation: you are sitting in front of the monitor and pondering the solution to your problem, a thought comes, you start typing, and then there is an error, move your eyes to the keyboard, start looking for the desired button, correct the error, and when you return your gaze to the screen, the thought already lost.

Some conclusions

Being able to type on the keyboard blindly is a must. At the same time, learning blind typing is not as difficult and time-consuming as it might seem at first glance – on the contrary, it is exciting and interesting.
